Ch. 6 Capitalize on the Reading-Writing Connection

Last week I took the district reading tests and made individual lists of all the many skills my students needed to work on. But after reading this chapter I need to find time for my poor readers and writers just to be reading their own materials, and have their teacher read to them every day. I loved on page 123 where she tells them to read like a wolf eats.

I loved it when the author said we need to give our students more time to read and write, and that we should provide our students with opportunities to read what their fellow students have written.

I also think it is important to read lots in the classroom. I have silent reading first thing in the morning and this chapter reinforced to me that it is time well used. :)

Hi Janice,

I also enjoyed the simile that Gary Paulsen used, "Read like a wolf eats..." I know my students will like it too.

Enjoy reading to your students in the coming weeks. My students enjoy our class book and are always listening for similes.

Happy reading and writing!

Janice,

I really believe our strong readers are kids who were read to on a daily basis when they were little. Something parents can do that's so important to help their child succeed in and out of school.

Some of your kids, who are not readers, who were not read to by parents, struggle in just reading the text that it's such a treat for them to have someone read to them. These kids sit and listen and can tell you what's happening in the story.

I bet you'd include more time to do just that if you were in charge of scheduling.

Definitely reading and writing need to coincide. It is beneficial to have students read their writing and others. We need to provide the opportunities:)

I also thought about needing to have my students read more of their writing. I liked the idea of making a book throughout the year.
